Going Green! Monster Energy rages off the line to start the Dakar Rally!

When much of the United States awakens from a night of revelry and tunes into a solid day?s worth of football, some of the world?s top off-road racers will already be tearing across the Argentinean countryside in what?s been called the most grueling test of man and machine in the world ? the 33rd running of the Dakar Rally.

And, of course, Monster Energy is right in the thick of things at Dakar, fielding two teams ? the Monster Energy X-raid Team and the Monster Energy-backed Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain - in hopes of conquering this most global mega motorsports contest!

Opening with the Monster Energy X-raid Team and the five colorful MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles and three BMW X3 CC entries, the 96-man team will pursue/support drivers led by French endurance off-road legend Stephane Peterhansel ? a nine-time winner at Dakar (six motorcycle title, three auto). Joining Peterhansel under the Monster Energy banner at Dakar will again be Polish great Krzysztof Holowczyc ? a seven-time Dakar Rally combatant/5th at Dakar last year, along with Russian FIA World Cup Cross Country great Leonid Novitskiy and 2004 motorcycle class Dakar champion Joan Roma.

Passing scrutineering on Saturday at Plaza Colon in Mal del Plata?s downtown area, the Monster Energy X-raid Team was introduced to the sizeable Argentinean crowed to great fanfare ? with the Monster Energy brand and iconic logo being a big hit with the local crowd.

On the Husqvarna TE 449 RR dirt bikes Monster Energy?s led by Portugal?s Paulo Goncalves, Spanish greats Joan Barreda and Jose Manuel Pellicer, along with local Brazilians Ike Klaumann and Ze Helio. Although the bikes don?t run the same course as the cars, they will cover the same 14 stages and 8,391 kilometers from the Argentinean coast across the Andes through Chile and up to Peru?s capital city, Lima.

Dakar Stage 1 Update ?(Monster Energy X-raid takes (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th and 13th)

Stage 1 Update: Although the likelihood of a Mini win was obvious to even the least knowledgeable of pundits, the identity of the winner is slightly surprising. The length of today?s stage means that performances here are not too representative, but Leonid Novitskiy exploited his best driving skills to seize his first special stage win at the Dakar. The 2011 Rally Raid World Champion started 13th and pipped his teammates Krzysztof Holowzyc and St?phane Peterhansel at the finishing line, besting them by 5" and 9" respectively. At the end of the day, X-Raid has three Minis at the top of the classification, ahead of Giniel de Villiers, who posted a strong performance in the Dakar debut of his Toyota Hilux.
