2015: The year of the domestic drone

A Lufthansa Airlines aircraft takes off from Tegel airport on October 12, 2007 in Berlin, Germany. (Andreas Re??

Nothing stresses out drone enthusiasts more than reading in the news that some hobbyist decided to pilot a homemade, remote-controlled helicopter drone over Alcatraz or, as in a reported case in March, test out a three-foot-wide drone near a jetliner landing at John F. Kennedy airport.

?People like that make our lives more difficult,? said Brandon Stark, a drone researcher at the University of California, Merced.

These flights are illegal?people must keep drones within their line of sight, under 400 feet, and away from airports?but that hasn?t stopped a few rogue hobbyists from breaking the rules. It was these kinds of incidents that led the Federal Aviation Administration to greatly restrict small drone flights in the first place in 2007 and begin the process of coming up with still-uncompleted universal safety standards for unmanned aircraft that could be as stringent as those for commercial airliners.

?There were people doing really stupid stuff,? said Ted Wierzbanowski, a retired Air Force colonel and the chair of a committee tasked by the FAA to recommend safety regulations for small drones that weigh less 55 pounds. ?The FAA saw all of this happening and how unsafe it was starting to become, and they had to shut it down.?

Small drones?or unmanned aerial systems, as their fans prefer to call them?have been tightly regulated by the FAA since 2007. Businesses cannot use a drone in any commercial endeavor, and researchers and public agencies must go through a rigorous application process to use unmanned aircraft for nonprofit reasons. Meanwhile, European countries have had laxer rules, leaving the U.S. drone industry to lament that it is losing out internationally.

This is all expected to change in late 2015, the deadline Congress gave the FAA to begin the ?safe integration of civil unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system.? The agency will dip a toe into these waters sometime before then by opening up six test sites around the country where drones will fly alongside manned aircraft. (The test sites were supposed to be announced last year, but scientists and drone businessmen in 24 states are still waiting to hear if they will be chosen.)

The delay in FAA approval has made people wary of another drone incident. ?If we have one accident, that?s going to kill the industry or slow it down even more than it?s being slowed down by the privacy thing,? Wierzbanowski said during a speech to drone researchers at an international conference in Atlanta on Thursday. (He was referring to criticisms that the use of drones for domestic surveillance could invade citizens? privacy.)

In the meantime, scientists are working to develop systems that make drones safer and even in some cases override their human operators.

?Everybody has pretty much accepted that this is happening, and now [the question is], how do we make this happen safely?? said Wierzbanowski.

Scientists and regulators are encountering two main questions in developing the safety regulations: How to design drones so that they avoid running into manned aircraft, and how to make sure drones that lose contact with their ground control do not hurt people.

Wierzbanowski?s committee recommended that the operators of small, low-flying drones should be in charge of avoiding manned aircraft, instead of the other way around. In this fairly low-tech scenario, one person would be in charge of scanning the area for other aircraft and then telling the operator on the ground if he or she sees anything. The operator would then flip a switch that would force the drone to dive like a bird and get out of the way of the larger manned plane.

With larger drones that are flying out of the line of sight of the people who are controlling them from the ground, something more high-tech is needed. Air traffic controllers would track these drones just like manned aircraft, making sure their flight paths do not intersect with any other craft. But as a backup scenario, researchers are also working on ?sense and avoid? systems on larger drones so that the machines can avoid other aircraft on their own. Many of these systems provide live video back to the pilot on the ground, who scans the image for any sign of trouble, but some are more sophisticated and autonomous.

Drones can also take the heart rate and other physiological data from their on-the-ground operators to gauge their stress levels. The system could be trained to take over from the human operator if it decides his or her stress levels are too high or that the operator is making irrational decisions.

Drones also need a safe way to deal with the possibility that the frequency it uses to communicate to its ground control could be interfered with, either intentionally (by hackers) or unintentionally (by an overloaded network). The FAA could require all drones to be programmed to automatically fly back to where they launched from if the signal is cut, to dive to the ground wherever they are when they lose the signal, or to fly around in a holding pattern until the signal is restored.

None of these safety regulations, however, would deal with the issues raised by people who buy cheap drones from a local store and then decide to misuse them. Some have suggested that commercially available drones should be fitted with altimeters that prevent them from flying above the legal 400 feet, but it?s unclear whether the FAA would endorse that. Altimeters could also be disabled.

?There?s no speed limits on our cars. We?re trusting that humans won?t fly 140 mph on our roads,? Merced said.

Secret Service: Letter to White House intercepted

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Secret Service said Thursday that a suspicious letter similar to the ones sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been intercepted by a White House mail screening facility.

The letter has been turned over to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force for testing and investigation.

It was unclear how the letter intercepted by the White House facility was similar to the ricin-laced ones addressed to Bloomberg.

Two threatening letters postmarked in Louisiana and containing traces of the deadly poison ricin were sent to Bloomberg in New York and to his gun-control group in Washington, officials said.

The anonymous letters were opened in New York on Friday at the city's mail facility in Manhattan and in Washington on Sunday at an office used by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the nonprofit started by Bloomberg, police said Wednesday.

Police said preliminary testing indicated the presence of ricin in both letters involving Bloomberg, but that more testing would be done. Police said the threats contained references to the debate on gun laws and an oily pinkish-orange substance..

How to Grow a New Windpipe from Stem Cells

By Kiona Smith-Strickland

May 29, 2013 4:12 PM Text Size: A . A . A Q

Why study the trachea?

AIt started many years ago when I was a resident and I did my Ph.D. on organ and tissue transplantation. Crazy as it might be, the trachea was the only organ that was not transplanted. The fact that so many children during my clinical rotation were dying of airway diseases without any possibility of being treated triggered my interest in tracheal transplant. Q

How do you create a trachea from stem cells?

AIt's a long process. We will need to know exactly what the [three dimensions] of the trachea are that the patient requires. Then we need to calculate how many cells we would need for seeding the trachea with the patient's own stem cells and build a specifically designed bioreactor. The trachea, when it is transplanted, is seeded with nonembryonic cells (so-called mononuclear cells) using a bioreactor where the cells attach to it and proliferate. Once transplanted, these cells locally become viable trachea cells. They stay for days and weeks, and when they die, they give a signal to the other cells. Cells in the blood can be recruited and then further differentiate. We help the human body to boost the regeneration by giving growth factors for a period of two weeks post-transplant. Q

Hannah Warren was born without a trachea. How common is this condition?

AIt's very rare. It's one out of every 50,000 births. The problem is that almost 100 percent [of patients] die by 6 years?the longest survival has been 5 or 6 years. So it's a very rare but lethal disease. Q

What other kinds of patients are candidates for this surgery?

AMost have had benign diseases of the airways, but a few have had malignant tumors, so tumors are an indication. Q

You had to get authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to perform Hannah's surgery.

AThis still is an experimental therapy, so basically you cannot get permission for the routine cases. You need to do this only in the worst scenario for patients who have been maximally pretreated through surgeries or other types of treatments. To get authorization for clinical trial, you need to provide the evidence that this technology is safe and effective enough in animals and in a small-case clinical series. Once you have provided the evidence, then the national authority usually grants the trial. Q

You performed a nine-hour trachea transplant surgery on a 2-year-old. What was that like?

AHell. It was very complex because, despite all the preoperative investigations, you usually find something that you do not expect. Q

Are these transplants risky?

AAt least the patients we have [treated] were patients where this transplant was the last resort, and this is the reason why the complication rates are higher [than with other types of surgery]. The outcome clearly is influenced by surgical complication rate and the primary disease, because we have patients who died from the tumor irrespective of the transplant. Q

Hannah will outgrow this trachea in five years and need a replacement. Is there a way to build a trachea that might grow with the patient? Are organs grown from stem cells different in any other way?

AI don't expect that the trachea would grow. It would be wonderful, but in five years, we will have saved her life and the routine transplant will be much easier, so there will be no comparison with the one she had. We are working on [organs that grow], yes. [They] do not look different, and probably do not even behave differently. Q

Has the controversy over embryonic stem cells impacted your work with nonembryonic stem cells?

ANot necessarily, because I think that scientists should be open and should not take into account the controversy. My point is that if science is done, it should be regulated by strict guidelines and done without political interference. If we can have just one single patient saved, a child or an adult, all this controversy is just nonsense. We just need to respect the regulations, the rules, and do scientifically sound research. Q

What's next?

Ao extend what we have done in other types of tissues, like the diaphragm, and treat not-treatable disease not by replacing the organ but by doing cell therapy?that would be my dream. You could use your own stem cells to restore the function of an organ that has lost its function because of disease. Basically, the framework is still there. We just need to restore the cells that make this organ live.

Security Researcher Raises Concerns over Apple's Two-Step Authentication

Security Researcher Raises Concerns over Apple's Two-Step Authentication

CEO Vladimir Katalov of the security software company Elcomsoft has published a post on CrackPassword outlining where he believes Apple?s two-step authentication comes up short. While he admits that the authentication works as advertised and it?s a good idea for people to enable it, he has also identified some areas that he thinks could use some improvement.

Back in March, Apple joined the list of tech companies rolling out two-step authentication in an effort to increase user security. Two-step authentication works by requiring users to provide an additional piece of information beyond their username and password when logging into their account on an untrusted device. In Apple?s case, the additional piece of information is a security code that will be sent to a trusted device whenever a new device tries to access an account. This helps to try and limit the amount of damage that a malicious person could do to your account if they were to acquire your Apple ID and password.

According to Apple, two-step authentication will require you to enter the additional security code when doing the following:

  • Sign in to My Apple ID to manage your account.
  • Make an iTunes, App Store, or iBookstore purchase from a new device.
  • Get Apple ID-related support from Apple.

Katalov?s asserts that the missing item from the list is iCloud. iCloud data is not protected by two-step authentication and as such, if your account is compromised, an attacker could restore an iCloud backup to one of their own devices. Normally if this were to happen, you would get an email alerting you that a new device has signed into your iCloud account. However, in Elcomsoft?s testing they were able to download an iCloud backup using their own Phone Password Breaker tool and the notification email did not get triggered. This means that an attack with your account credentials could download a backup of your device with all of your data and you wouldn?t even know.

One big question is why would Apple exclude iCloud data from the protections of two-step authentication? The reason for this decision by Apple is likely one of user convenience. Currently if something were to happen to your iPhone, you could get a new one at the Apple Store and immediately start restoring the device from the iCloud backup (assuming you have iCloud backups enabled). If two-step authentication was required for this, the user would need to have another trusted device available to receive the security code on in order to authorize the new device. It?s possible that Apple consciously made this security tradeoff for the sake of convenience and user experience.

If you have two-step authentication enabled, leave it on. You?re not putting yourself at any additional risk over users who leave it turned off, and in fact, are still safer than if you were to turn it off. Rolling out two-step authentication was a step in the right direction for Apple, but what remains to be seen is if they have plans for rolling out a more secure, robust authentication system down the line.

Independent RI Gov. Chafee, ex-GOP, to become Dem

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Independent Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is joining the Democratic Party ahead of his bid for a second term, two Democratic officials said Thursday.

Chafee served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican but left the GOP in 2007. He was elected as the nation's only independent governor in 2010.

The officials said Chafee plans to change his registration to join the party. They weren't authorized to disclose the information publicly ahead of any announcement from Chafee and spoke on condition of anonymity. Chafee's staff did not immediately confirm his plan.

Chafee has been saying for months that he was thinking about the switch, noting that he shares many positions with Democrats and that joining the party will help with fundraising. He is a supporter of President Barack Obama and spoke at last year's Democratic National Convention.

The move further complicates next year's Democratic primary and sets up the possibility of a three-way matchup with Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Treasurer Gina Raimondo.

Registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in Rhode Island more than three to one, although most voters aren't affiliated with any party.

Chafee is son of the late U.S. Sen. John Chafee, a former governor whose name was synonymous with the Republican Party in Rhode Island for decades. When John Chafee died in office in 1999, Lincoln Chafee was appointed to fill his seat, and then won re-election to the post the following year. In the Senate, he voted to the left of many Democrats, opposing the war in Iraq, for example, and supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage. But he stuck it out as a Republican through his 2006 re-election campaign, which he lost to democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

He left the party in 2007 and became an independent. He made his political comeback in 2010, winning a four-way race for governor with 36 percent of the vote.

As governor, Chafee has struggled with poor approval ratings and some of his policy proposals have fizzled in the face of opposition in the General Assembly, such as an early plan to expand the sales tax.

Chafee is a reluctant fundraiser, and he has often depended on personal wealth to fund his campaigns. He told The Associated Press in December that he was considering joining the Democrats to help his chances of winning a second term.

"There is no independent governors' association throwing money around ... but there is a Democratic Governors Association," he said at the time.

What Do You Think of Arrested Development Season 4 So Far?

What Do You Think of Arrested Development Season 4 So Far?

If you're like us, you probably spent a good part of your weekend plowing through at least some of Arrested Development season 4 on Netflix. Were you able to restrain yourself, or did you binge and watch all 15 episodes? What do you think so far?

We're also interested to know how many folks signed up for Netflix just to watch the new episodes. If you did, are you going to stick with the subscription so you can have on-demand Bluths whenever you want? Or are you going to ditch Netflix once you've gotten your fix?

This should go without saying, but let's be civil about spoilers in the discussion below, please.

Niagara Falls minor hockey looking at options after Hockey Canada move

Niagara Falls minor hockey will look at teaching some of its younger players how to give and take a hit after the sport?s national governing body voted to eliminate bodychecking at the peewee level.

Hockey Canada announced at its annual general meeting Saturday that, starting this fall, bodychecking would begin at bantam when players are 13-14 years old.

There is no hitting at the house league level.

?I think it?s a good thing. I support it 100%,? NFMHA president Butch Sacco said. ?I think what Hockey Canada did was in the best interest of young players today.?

The vote was necessitated after a recent study showed a significant increase in injuries, including concussions, in peewee players in Alberta who were allowed to bodycheck versus those the same age in Quebec, where hitting is banned in peewee.

Sacco said the topic will come up at the NFMHA meeting in July. He?d like to bring someone in to teach players in major atom and peewee ? whether it?s every two weeks or once a month ? how to properly handle contact to prepare them for bantam.

Hockey Canada said it will develop a bodychecking standard for coaching beginning in the 2014-15 season.

?It?s gotta start way back at younger ages and you have to get qualified people in to teach this,? Sacco said. ?It?s going to be difficult because you have volunteers, and nothing against them but a lot aren?t qualified to teach body contact unless they have experience.?

Niagara Falls Canucks head coach Terry Masterson applauded the move. Masterson has coached minor hockey for seven years at different times throughout his career.

?Another year away from (hitting) won?t hurt, and it?s good for (preventing) concussions,? he said. ?A lot of these concussions start when kids are little. They?ll get better refereeing a year later.?

Many of Masterson?s junior B teams through the years have been built on physical intimidation, but the longtime coach acknowledges the game is changing.

?I don?t think it?s going to hurt the game at all,? he said. ?They have to work on their skating and skills before they?re physical.

?It doesn?t matter who wins or loses at that level, it?s about development.?

We asked readers what they thought of Hockey Canada's decision over the weekend to ban bodychecking in peewee hockey ? ages 11-12. Here are some of the responses:

Jennie Fraser: "I think it's probably a good thing. Young kids of that age are not always in control of their anger (obviously there are some adults guilty of this as well), but besides that point, I think there are far more important hockey skills they could be working on instead."

Martin Letourneau: "Perhaps we should also remove the puck, skates and ice. We could bubble wrap them and they could play on air mattresses."

Rick O'Banion: "While well meaning, I think it will cause more injuries in the long run. The longer they have the habit of being able to skate while looking down, the longer it will take to break them of it and the more times they will get hit hard when they move up to bantam."

South Florida?s luxury home market sizzles

The $30-million sale of Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez?s Miami Beach party pad conjures the old adage, ?The rich get richer.??

As South Florida?s housing market continues posting solid price gains, the luxury end is leading the charge with one record breaking sale after another.

?The market is on fire here,?? said broker Jill Eber of The Jills team at Coldwell Banker, who found the buyers for A-Rod?s house at 4358 N. Bay Rd., Miami Beach.

?The luxury market used to be more seasonal. But now there?s such an influx of people from around the world, some of our biggest sales are happening in summer,?? said broker Jill Hertzberg of The Jills team, which had $475 million in sales in 2012, a record among Coldwell Banker agents.

The sale of A-Rod?s home set a record for Miami Beach (though below the Miami-Dade record of $47 million for 3 Indian Creek Dr. set last year in the adjacent enclave of Indian Creek Village).

Meanwhile, Friday in Fort Lauderdale, an eight-bedroom, 8?1/2 bath house at 2400 Del Lago Dr. in Harbor Beach sold for $17.5 million including furnishings, a recent Broward County record, according to listing agent Sheryl Hodor of Prudential Florida Realty. The California modern-style mansion boasts 400-feet fronting on the Intracoastal Waterway.

?We?ve seen an increase in prices and demand,?? said Hodor. When the real estate market crashed, she said, the luxury end took a shorter, shallower dive than much of the market. ?High-end sellers can hold onto their property. They usually have two or three. So we didn?t see the decline as much in the high end.??

?Last to drop, first to rally,?? said Beth Butler, president of One Sotheby?s International Realty. ?The prices have obviously come back in the luxury tier and have now exceeded their highs.?? Rodriguez?s sister, Arlene Susy Dunand, who is an agent at One Sotheby?s International Realty, represented her brother in the transaction, which closed May 24.

Rodriguez had bought the North Bay Road site in May 2010 for $7.4 million and custom built the sleek modern home, which has nine bedrooms and 11?1/2 baths with 275 feet of bayfront land overlooking downtown Miami. The home has covered terraces, Zen-style gardens, an outdoor kitchen and rooftop deck.

A-Rod, a three-time American League most valuable player, has been on the Yankees? disabled list following hip surgery in January, but he?s practicing at the team?s spring training complex in Tampa. He is one of three partners in Coral Gables-based Newport Property Construction, which built the home for about $7.6 million in 2011.

The buyer was Stephen Levin, chairman of Gold Coast Beverage Distributors, a large Doral-based beer distributor, whose wife Petra is a former Miss Germany. Stephen Levin, of Palm Beach, didn?t return phone calls to his office seeking comment.

South Florida ultra-luxury condo prices similarly are hitting lofty new highs.

In March, two penthouse units at the Miami Beach Edition sold for a total of $34 million with plans to combine them into an eight-bedroom, three-level penthouse spanning more than 16,000 square feet of space.

Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky, left, argues the decision of the umpire to call the ball in, in his first round match against Richard Gasquet of France at the French Open tennis tournament, in Roland Garros stadium in Paris, Monday, May 27, 2013. Stakhovsky later took a picture with his smart phone of the mark of the ball on the clay court. (AP Photo/Michel Spingler)

(AP) ? Picture this: Angered by a line call, a tennis player pulls out his phone and uses it to snap a photo of the mark left in the clay by the ball.

Maybe the sort of thing that would happen at a public court, if two pals got into a tiff during a match and one wanted evidence for later ? except in this case, it was a professional who did it at the French Open.

Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine set down his racket and briefly became an amateur photographer in his 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 loss to seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet of France in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament Monday.

Stakhovsky plans to show the picture to the tournament supervisor in hopes of avoiding losing some of his prize money.

"I'm now expecting a fine, actually, so I'm going to go and fight," Stakhovsky said.

"I believe it was a bad call, it was a bad judgment. After all, we are playing on clay, where you should be clearly able to read the mark," he added, "and unfortunately, not all of our referees are able to do so."

During the first set on Court Suzanne Lenglen, the 101st-ranked Stakhovsky hit a shot that landed right along a line. The ball was ruled out, but Stakhovsky was sure it was in.

He argued with the chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, who wouldn't change the decision. So Stakhovsky decided to gather proof for his case, getting his phone and walking over to where the spot in question was, then leaning over to get a close-up of the red clay.

"It was just spontaneous. It's never thought through," he said. "When you see it, you get frustrated, because you saw the ball is nowhere being out and the frustrations comes in."

Asked by a reporter to show the photo, Stakhovsky obliged, grabbing his phone from a pocket.

"Everybody wants to see it," he said with a chuckle.

Stakhovsky said it wasn't even the first time he'd done this: He pulled a similar stunt during the clay-court tournament at Munich last month.

"Munich was a very close call which could go both ways, so I didn't really bother going to the supervisor and asking. But this one is in a Grand Slam, so first of all, the fine is actually there, possibly, (and) I don't want to get it. So I'll try to explain myself. I don't know if it's going to work."

At a clay event in Rome this month, another pro, Viktor Troicki of Serbia, ushered a TV cameraman out onto the court to get video evidence of a ball mark he was sure showed a call was incorrect.

"I saw that," Stakhovsky said, then offered a critique of the camerawork on that occasion, saying the angle was all wrong: "They came from the side, so you couldn't see the mark."

Gasquet, for his part, agreed the call Monday was quite close and said he wasn't bothered a bit by Stakhovsky's antics.

"It's funny. It's not a problem," Gasquet said. "He's a funny guy. I think he's one of the funniest guys in the draw. For sure, it's not usual to see that, but I can understand he's frustrated."

11-year-old bitten by shark off central Florida

An 11-year-old boy needed stitches after being bitten on his foot by a shark in the waters off central Florida.

Kyle Kirkpatrick was bitten while he was swimming with his father Monday afternoon in Ormond Beach.

Kyle tells WKMG-TV in Orlando ( http://bit.ly/19ieLD2) that he was trying to catch a wave when he felt something tug at his foot. When he turned around, his foot hurt and he saw blood in the water.

Kyle says he also saw the shark's dark shadow in the water.

Todd Kirkpatrick scooped up his son and rushed to the beach, where an off-duty paramedic put gauze on the wound and called 911.

Kyle needed three stitches on his foot. He says he'll go swimming again "but it'll be kind of scary."

Whiteface Mountain spokesman Jon Lundin says 36 inches of white powder has blanketed the nearly 5,000-foot tall mountain in the Adirondacks. That has forced the Olympic Regional Development Authority to close Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway on the backside of the mountain.

Lundin says the?snow?began lightly falling Saturday and steadily dropped Sunday, finishing in the evening. He didn't know if the 3-foot snowfall was a record for Whiteface.

Burlington, Vt., National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Muccilli says the mountain experienced steady?snowand gusty winds throughout the weekend.

He says Mount Mansfield, in Stowe, Vt., had 13.2 inches of?snow?Sunday, the latest in the season it's ever had a foot.

Kerry: $4b Palestinian economic plan could work

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday he believes a plan potentially worth $4 billion is emerging that could expand the Palestinian economy by up to 50 percent in the next three years.

It could also cut unemployment by almost two-thirds and average wages could jump 40 percent, he said. But Kerry said it all depends on parallel progress on peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Kerry has been working with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and global business leaders to devise economic plans to revitalize the Palestinian economy. There were few specific details offered.

Kerry spoke at a business conference in Jordan alongside Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Kerry called the plan "transformative" and "different than anything we've done before."

He was to meet later Sunday in Amman with Blair, American hedge fund investor Tim Collins and the foreign ministers of Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

The plan is expected to address tourism, construction, light manufacturing, agriculture and communications opportunities.

Kerry said Palestinian agriculture production could double or triple. Tourism could triple, and 100,000 new homes, many of them energy efficient, could be built in the next three years.

Kerry acknowledged the plan offers a very optimistic vision for a region that has suffered through decades of conflict, and where peace prospects remain dim.

But he insisted: "We know it can be done."

He said Netanyahu and Abbas support the plan. He said economic plans won't take hold unless Israel and the Palestinians make headway on restarting peace talks, however.

Kerry has been trying over the last two months to rejuvenate the peace process. He hasn't made any tangible success so far, but insists he is engaged in productive talks with both sides.

A century on, Stravinsky's 'Rite' still summons the caveman

By Michael Roddy

LONDON (Reuters) - A hundred years ago this week, the premiere of Russian emigre composer Igor Stravinsky's pounding, pagan, pulsating "The Rite of Spring" caused a near riot in Paris and changed the face of modern music. It still makes conductors' hair stand on end.

"I have to admit that when we come to the moment just before the last dance, and the bass clarinet goes down, my blood pressure is up, I have this sort of adrenaline surge," Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen told Reuters recently in London.

"It's an old caveman reaction - now you have to be prepared to leap even higher than ever before because the saber-toothed tiger is just behind you - and I love it," he said of facing the piece's finale, with its tricky, irregular and shifting rhythms.

On Wednesday night a sold-out audience at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, where on May 29, 1913, Marcel Proust, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy attended perhaps the most notorious premiere in the history of music - Giacomo Puccini called it "sheer cacophony" - will get a chance to relive that thrilling night.

The 100th anniversary of the short work by the then little-known, bespectacled and clerkish composer, who somehow distilled man's primitive nature in a raucous and earthy half hour of music that concludes with a virgin's dance to the death, will get a double dose of the Rite.

Valery Gergiev will lead the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra in a 1987 reconstruction of Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky's 1913 original choreography by ballet historians Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer. That will be followed by a new version by Berlin-based choreographer Sasha Waltz.

Stravinsky's music "conceals some ancient force, it's as if it's filled with the power of the Earth", Waltz said in conjunction with the premiere of her ballet earlier this month by the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg, in comments on the website of the Russkiy Mir cultural and educational foundation.

Stravinsky's changing time signatures and use of dissonance in the Rite set the tone of music for the rest of the century.

Wednesday's event will be a tout-Paris affair, with critics, luminaries of the cultural world and French officialdom in attendance, but the Rite is not a piece that needs dusting off or a stamp of approval. Its appeal is visceral and immediate.

"The miracle of that piece is the eternal youth of it. It's so fresh, it still kicks ass," said Salonen, who has recorded the Rite at least three times and will play it at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in early June. "How many 100-year-old pieces do that?"

Or, as Alan Gilbert, the music director of the New York Philharmonic, told Reuters in an interview recently in Dresden, after getting rave reviews for his Rite earlier this year: "It's a very dirty piece in every way and should be shocking."

"SUCCES DE SCANDALE"

To this day, there is lively debate about what happened a century ago in the theatre, a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. Did a Parisian claque, incensed at the choreography of impresario Serge Diaghilev's Russian lead dancer and lover Nijinsky, arrive bloody-minded and armed with vegetables? Did Stravinsky's pounding, pagan music inflame passions?

Stravinsky himself described Nijinsky's faux-primitive, peasant-garbed corps de ballet as looking like "a group of knock-kneed and long-braided Lolitas jumping up and down", but he also said Nijinsky's choreography was all the piece needed.

Following the uproar, the ballet was performed only half a dozen times, but the music was played to noisy audiences in Paris, more respectful ones in London and Russia, and by the 1920s was a hit in the United States and, later, the world.

"It was 'horrible music', terrifying; you might frighten your children with it, but very few people had heard it, so I think that helped its reputation to expand before the music arrived," Stephen Walsh, author of a two-volume biography of Stravinsky, said in a telephone interview.

In 1940, the Rite made its screen debut in Walt Disney's animated paean to classical music "Fantasia", with warring dinosaurs taking the place of the Lolitas. Perhaps in deference to Disney's famous prurience, the sacrificial dance was excised by the ever-accommodating Leopold Stokowski, the British conductor of Polish-Irish heritage, who led the Philadelphia Orchestra for the soundtrack.

This year the big music labels have done something they rarely do these days, putting a spotlight on the Rite like no other piece in living memory by releasing box sets reprising the best versions in their back catalogues - 10 CDs in one box for Sony, and a whopping 20 for Universal.

"We need to remind people how shocking and awesome this was, so let's do something a bit crazy," said Graham Southern, catalogue manager for Universal in London.

"It's edgy, it's exciting and, to me, listening to the piece, it's an experience," said Robert Russ, Southern's counterpart at Sony. He cherishes his set's remastering of a 1940 recording conducted by Stravinsky, in which the orchestra stumbles through the sacrificial dance, emphasizing how hard it was at the time.

"It's kind of charming because we are living in an era of perfection and everybody expects crystal-clear sound and perfect timings ... but that's also the reason why even if you have a nice house, people are sitting in front of a fireplace ... This is the experience of some of these historic recordings."

It's asparagus season, and this delightfully simple tart keeps the weekend restful so you can be ready to greet a new week.

There are hints of both the blessed and the accursed about some Sundays. The good parts, of course, are obvious. A day of worship for many. A day of rest. It is a day of sleeping in, and long breakfasts, and lolling and lounging and hot baths and long runs and maybe even a nap.?

All good. All very good. But there is this whiff of despair in the air some Sundays, or maybe it?s just me, looking ahead and counting the dwindling hours of freedom and ease.?

Instead of staying in the pleasant?now?of couch and cat and book I start doing mental arithmetic:?this many hours until I need to get ready for work tomorrow, and then get to bed and then get up and go to work?and oh, my week is going to be so busy, and I don?t want to go to work, not yet ? and there I am, dreading Monday morning instead of living Sunday afternoon. I?m sure I smell a whiff of brimstone in the air, possibly hear the echo of devilish laughter.

But you know what helps drive back the darkness?? A little time spent in the kitchen ? not hurrying, just flowing with the chopping and stirring. ?And then a good meal, like this summer-y tart. Yes, the leftovers will be good for lunch on Monday afternoon, too.? But don?t think about Monday while you are making it.

Asparagus and Caramelized Onion Tart

?1 shortcrust tart shell

1 large onion

1 teaspoon olive oil

15 ounces whole milk ricotta

1/4 cup cream

1 egg

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1/4 tsp salt

several grinds of pepper

1-2 tablespons/small handful of fresh parsley, minced fine

15-20 stalks of asparagus, ends trimmed

drizzle of olive oil

1. You will need a tart shell that is approximately 10 inches wide for this recipe.? Buy one, take one out of the freezer, or use your favorite shortcrust recipe to create one from scratch. Whichever way, you?ll need it rolled out and pressed into a pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Coarsely chop onion. In a saut? pan or wok over medium heat, stir onions in 1 teaspoon of olive oil,? then cook very, very slowly until caramelized ? at least half an hour, stirring occasionally.? Add a splash of water every now and then if needed to keep onions from frying/burning/overbrowning. They are done when they are soft, golden brown, and smell sweet.

3. Meanwhile, prebake the tart shell for 10 minutes, then remove from oven.

4. Vigorously stir together ricotta, cream, egg, lemon zest, parsley, salt and pepper.? Pour into tart shell.? Top ricotta mixture with caramelized onions, distributed evenly. Arrange asparagus spears on top of onion layer. Drizzle very lightly with olive oil.

5. Place tart pan on a baking sheet and place in oven. Bake for 30 minutes, then check periodically and remove from oven when ricotta is set, asparagus looks cooked, and tart is generally golden brown on top.

Original ?Ultimate Fighter? Forrest Griffin retires

After 26 fights and a key role in turning the UFC into the promotion it is today, Forest Griffin has retired. His decision was announced at the UFC 160 post-fight press conference.

"It's been a good eight years, I guess. Biggest thing I've learned ... when [UFC president] Dana White says retire otherwise you will blow your knee out," Griffin said at the press conference.

Griffin's last fight was a win over UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz in July of 2012. Coincidentally, it was Ortiz's last bout before retirement. He won that fight by decision. His career included 19 wins, 7 losses and a stint as the UFC light heavyweight champion.

What Griffin will always be remembered for is being one-half of a fight that catapulted the UFC into fame. He and Stephan Bonnar were finalists on the first season of the UFC's reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter." Their fight was a close, thrilling battle that played on Spike TV on April 9, 2005.

It was responsible for earning the UFC many fans, which helped earn bigger sponsors and television deals. Griffin won the decision, taking the title of the first "Ultimate Fighter," but both fighters were given contracts.

Griffin went on to be a force in the 205 lb. division, upsetting Pride star Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in 2007, then taking the belt from Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in July of 2008. He lost the belt to Rashad Evans that December.

White said Griffin will continue to have a role with the UFC.

PFT: U. of Houston back ponders supplemental draft

Jim Harbaugh, Michael Crabtree, A. J. JenkinsAP

With last year?s leading receiver, Michael Crabtree, out an estimated six months with a torn Achilles tendon, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh says he?s confident someone will step up to fill the void.

Harbaugh isn?t totally sure who that ?someone? will be, though.

Harbaugh said on 95.7 The Game that he believes the most likely candidates to take Crabtree?s place in the offense are last year?s first-round pick A.J. Jenkins and this year?s fourth-round pick Quinton Patton as well as Ricardo Lockette, who has never played in a game for the 49ers but spent most of last year on the roster and has reportedly looked good in practices.

?We?ll put Jenkins, Patton, Ricardo Lockette at the same position and let them compete and emerge,? Harbaugh said. ?The good news is that somebody will emerge because they have to.?

Harbaugh also said he believes the 49ers have a lot of depth at the receiver position.

?Then on the other side, Anquan Boldin, Chad Hall, Marlon Moore has been doing some really nice things in the offseason,? Harbaugh said. ?Joe Hastings will compete on the other side. Kyle Williams eventually will come back from his injury. He?s doing real well, coming along very nicely. And Mario Manningham ? probably a little bit later than Kyle, but he?s on track to be healed up and ready to go, as well. A real good chance for some young guys to emerge, get some reps and contribute. I very much anticipate that will happen.?

For the 49ers, it needs to happen. Crabtree was the 49ers? best wide receiver and a big reason that Colin Kaepernick settled into the starting quarterback job so smoothly last year. He won?t be easy to replace, but the 49ers have no choice but to find someone who can do it.
