UK Ministry of Defence to auction off disused radio spectrum

Android Central

The ever developing LTE saga in the UK is potentially about to get another chapter. Following a 2010 Government spending review, the Ministry of Defence was forced to sell off at least 500MHz of public spectrum. In summer of 2014 200MHz will be auctioned off, and will be expected to raise around £1 billion. Better news for mobile users is that the spectrum will give the UK mobile operators more opportunities to strengthen their LTE offerings.

The MoD will begin to clear users from the spectrum to be vacated by the end of 2013, ahead of the auction. LTE is still in its infancy in the UK, with impending spectrum auctions being awaited by rival carriers to EE, which currently offers 4G services un-challenged.
