Healthy Pet Tips: How To Keep Your Dog Or Cat Happy And Fit

Healthy Pet Tips: How To Keep Your Dog Or Cat Happy And Fit

From Mother Nature Network's Morieka Johnson:

This is the time of year when we focus on shedding bad habits and starting anew. It?s also the time when plenty of newly adopted pets are settling into their new homes. Recently I asked experts to reveal the things new pet owners really need. After years interviewing professional dog walkers, trainers, specialists and veterinarians, I?ve also learned a few strategies to keep those new additions happy and healthy for years to come.

  • Maintain A Healthy Weight

Yes, this familiar advice applies to pets and people. With proper care and nutrition, cats and some dogs can live well into their late teens. But obesity can rob pets of years by inviting the risk for heart disease or lead to <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/questions/common-health-issues-in-older-cats">behavioral issues</a> such as missing the litter box. Set a strong foundation by purchasing high-quality pet food. Look for brands that list a protein such as chicken or fish among the first ingredients, and avoid giving pets table food. Remember that you control what goes into their bowl each day. Also keep in mind that pets ? including adorably tubular dachshunds ? should have a noticeable waistline. The <a href="http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm">American Kennel Club website</a> offers photos that help identify breed standards for purebreds. Your veterinarian can provide guidance on how much to feed furry companions based on age, breed and lifestyle. If your cat or dog?s waistline is a distant memory, try interactive toys to burn calories.

  • Invest In Training

Most dog trainers will admit that classes primarily benefit the owner, while pets gain valuable socialization skills. Take advantage of obedience training courses in your area. Petco recently launched a series of free seminars for new pet owners, with classes scheduled throughout the month. Some animal shelters offer free training classes as well. It?s a great opportunity for pets to interact with people, particularly kids, as well as other pets. Learning basic commands such as ?leave it,? ?stay,? and how to come when called could be lifesavers for dogs. Proper socialization also makes it easier for pets to travel with their people, including trips to the beach or other pet-friendly destinations. It?s much more fun and much less stressful than keeping them cooped up at a boarding facility. To see the benefits of socializing pets, check out this sweet video of a rescue helping a foster pup named Daisy tackle the stairs.

  • Take Time For Dental Care

Save those old toothbrushes and put them to use on a pet?s pearly whites (dogs and cats). Proper dental care helps reduce ?dog breath? as well as gum disease, which can lead to bigger health issues. Finger brushes, water additives and dental chews make the task a little easier. A product called <a href="http://www.orabrush.com/store/en/pets.php">Orabrush</a> tackles bad breath by scraping plaque buildup from the tongue. Originally designed for people, the line now includes a clever little brush that dogs lick to remove <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E96EbDtMptU">tongue gunk</a>. February is Pet Dental Health Month, so look for deep discounts on cleaning services at your vet?s office and schedule an appointment. Veterinary dental cleanings take at-home maintenance a step further by removing hardened plaque buildup that accumulates over time.

  • Keep Cats Hydrated

Urinary tract infections rank high among the list of expensive yet <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/questions/how-can-i-protect-my-pet-and-my-wallet-from-costly-vet-bills">preventable cat health issues</a>. Make sure your feline companions stay properly hydrated by adding wet food to their diets and providing plenty of clean water to their bowl or even a stylish <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/photos/13-cool-pet-problem-solvers/water-fountain">fountain</a>.

  • Maintain Flea, Tick And Heartworm Preventatives

In a column about <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/questions/why-do-dogs-lick-themselves-excessively">why dogs lick so much</a>, Dr. Annie Price of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ormewoodanimalhospital">Ormewood Animal Hospital</a> in Atlanta said that fleas are the No. 1 culprit. Resist the urge to cut flea and tick preventatives from your shopping list, even during cooler months, because pets run the risk of exposure anytime they go outside. Uncharacteristically warm weather means that mosquitoes will, once again, have a longer season to wreak havoc and pose a risk for deadly heartworm.

  • Don't Underestimate The Value Of Mental Stimulation

There really is some truth to the saying, ?A tired dog is a happy dog.? I know from experience that bored pets lead to chewed iPod cases, gnawed shoes and other crimes that my dog Lulu has committed but I have yet to discover. Cats, particularly those who spend their lives indoors, also benefit from mental stimulation. Invest in some interactive toys such as puzzles or a fun laser pointer to exercise those brain cells and bond with your pet. Frolicat?s high-tech <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/photos/13-cool-pet-problem-solvers/interactive-cat-toy">Twitch</a> toy even has a timer so you can keep felines occupied while you are away. Dogs tend to have relatively low-tech standards. Check out Planet Dog?s fun new Mazee treat <a href="http://www.planetdog.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ORBEE-TUFF%C2%AE%20MAZEE%E2%84%A2">puzzles</a> ($16.95) that can keep pups occupied on carpeted areas or flat surfaces.

  • Buy Pet Insurance Or Start An Emergency Savings Account

I know how it feels to sit in an emergency veterinary hospital, half-listening to a doctor outline his treatment plan ? along with the long list of expensive procedures required to treat a pet. Accidents or unexpected illness can lead to costly veterinary bills that drain savings. Don?t wait for a medical issue to arise before discussing finances with your family, and consider starting an emergency fund ? or investing in <a href="http://www.mnn.com/family/protection-safety/questions/what-are-my-pet-insurance-options">pet insurance</a>. Plans vary widely based on the pet?s age and the amount of coverage you select. Many of the larger pet insurance companies also set age limits that range from 10 to 14 years old, so it pays to start early. Even if you pick a plan that solely covers major accidents, that added precaution could save thousands. I would much rather spend that hard-earned cash on toys, trips to <a href="http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/eco-tourism/stories/5-dog-friendly-destinations">pet-friendly destinations</a> or new shoes to replace the ones that Lulu ate!

  • Also On The Huffington Post...

9 Employment Trends You Need to Know About for 2013 | Network ...

By Rieva Lesonsky

What does 2013 hold in store for your employees and your business? According to the 2013 Workforce/Workplace Forecast from The Herman Group, 2013 will look much like 2012, with most employers adopting a ?wait-and-see? approach to hiring and U.S. unemployment remaining above 7 percent for the year.

Here are 9 other trends you need to know about:

  1. Recruiting will intensify in many industries. Both big and small companies, especially in the IT sector, will feel pressure to hire due to burned-out, overworked staff. The bad news for small employers is that with big companies (with bigger benefits) hiring too, competition will be fierce.
  2. Trained, experienced workers will be in short supply in many fields. Consider promoting from within and providing your entry-level employees with the training they need to move into higher positions. Also develop relationships with local schools, colleges and universities to give you a pipeline to educated workers.
  3. Communities will become more aware of the lack of skilled employees, and smart local leadership will invest money and effort into developing the local workforce for the careers of tomorrow.
  4. Gamification will be used in training, performance evaluations and as a bonding tool to make work more fun and build relationships. It?s an especially important tool for companies seeking to engage their Millennial employees.
  5. Companies will use social networking to recruit new employees and to train and develop those they have. Don?t forget the internal social networks that even small companies have: If you?re looking to hire, try looking for referrals from your existing team.
  6. Companies will keep trying to do more with less?cutting staff and hiring independent contractors to squeeze still more productivity and profit out of their teams. There?s a right way and wrong way to re-engineer, Herman Group notes. Try to do it without cutting staff.
  7. ?Job churn? will grow as too many employers continue to ignore what?s needed to create a happy, engaged work force. ?There is a tremendous pent-up energy for job-hopping, which many employees have been putting off for years,? Herman Group warns. Ignore it at your peril.
  8. A second Obama Administration will likely mean greater regulation. You?d be smart to have access to an attorney with HR expertise, just in case. Herman Group believes that the Affordable Care Act may spur small and midsized employers to move from providing health insurance to taking part in ?insurance exchanges? and funding their employees? purchase of coverage there.
  9. Last, but not least, your small business might see more competition in 2013: Herman Group believes more unemployed people will take advantage of the growth in independent contracting by starting their own businesses (or at least becoming freelancers) to supply the services that businesses need.

3 Most Common Weight-Loss Mistakes and How to Correct Them ...

weight-loss-mistakesWhen it comes to losing weight, mixed messages are everywhere, especially in the media. With so many conflicting takes on how to lose weight, it?s easy to fall into a few especially common weight-loss mistakes, thinking you?re headed in the right direction. Then, when weigh-in day arrives, your results are disappointing, and you feel frustrated with no clue why your hard work isn?t paying off. Read on for some of the most common mistakes, and how you can reverse or avoid them.

Don?t Skip Breakfast
We all know that, to lose weight, you?ve got to cut your intake of calories and increase your output. So, it makes sense that this line of reasoning might lead you to skip meals, thereby reducing your overall calorie intake. But in reality, that?s about the worst way you can go about cutting calories, particularly in the morning. When you skip meals, you trick your body into going into starvation mode, capturing and hanging on to every calorie you do eat, and in essence lowering your metabolism. But, when you skip the morning meal, you do even more damage.

It?s simple: You?ve just got to eat breakfast to give your body the energy and strength it needs to function best throughout the busy day ahead. Moreover, if you miss breakfast, there?s a good chance you will end up consuming more unhealthy foods during the latter part of the day. If you want to shed some pounds, don?t miss breakfast. Just make sure that the first meal of the day is not composed of sugar-rich and carbohydrate-laden foods. Eggs, apples, and a toast of whole grain bread are good breakfast choices, and easy to prepare, too!

Fad Dieting
The cabbage-soup diet, the grapefruit diet, no carbs, no fat?you probably know a few people who have lost weight using these methods, but the fact is that weight loss through gimmickry is generally short-term, and laden with negative consequences. When you lose weight by cutting out a nutrient or an entire array of foods or by following some progression of food restrictions, sure, you?re going to see some fast results, but you?re also harming your health and setting yourself up for future failures. The fact is that when you go back to eating normally, all the pounds you lost will start to pile back on, and they?ll usually bring a few friends with them, leaving you frustrated, disappointed and very likely beating yourself up. So, just don?t do it. Failure and weight gain are built into these diet fads, so when the weight comes back, it?s not your fault, but if you continue the cycle of fad dieting, knowing how they work to keep you coming back for more, that is self-torture of the cruelest kind.

When you give your body the nutrients it needs from healthy sources, weight loss is going to come with the good habits you build by making healthy eating a routine, and it?s going to become naturally sustainable. So, skip the fad diets and make choices that support health, rather than chip away at it. Need some help? JSF offers nutrition counseling focused on sustainable health and wellness!

Negative Self-Talk
It feels bad, it crowds out other, more useful thoughts and it renders no benefits whatsoever, yet sometimes it seems impossible to stop. It?s negative self-talk and it?s an insidious barrier to weight loss for millions. Self-criticism isn?t motivating, it?s harmful, and when it comes to working toward a healthy goal, it?s got to stop! The mind plays a vital role in forming the body. If you believe that you can lose weight and keep it off, you?ve got a better-than-fighting-chance of succeeding, not only because it will help you stick with your weight-loss program, but you?ll also have a healthy and positive outlook on yourself and your ability to be victorious. If it is hard for you to believe that you can shed your unwanted pounds, there is a big possibility that you?ll fail by discouraging yourself and reverting back to your old, default ways.

Flip the script! When negative thoughts flood your mind, fight back, deliberately and consistently, with a different message. When ?I can?t do this? thoughts start to intrude, stop the flow, and plant better thoughts in the place of the bad ones. ?This is difficult, but I can do hard things, and I?ll do this too.? ?I?m in better shape than I was yesterday, and tomorrow, I?ll be better still. I just need to keep making these good choices, and the results will come to me.? When you interrupt the flow of bad thoughts, and replace them with good ones, over time you build up positive beliefs that will serve you in all areas of life. So go ahead, tell your internal detractors to shut up, and foster positive thoughts. It might feel silly at first, but that will stop when the pounds fall away, and a new, confident you begins to emerge.

Unusual Creatures for Kids in Song, Book and Video!

If you have kids, or teach, or were observant when you were a kid yourself, you know that kids learn in all different ways. Some are happy to sit quietly and read a book, some need the visual input from photo and video and some want to sing and dance their way to learning the material. Fortunately for all of these types of learning, Michael Hearst of the Unusual Creatures Project has just released his first episode of ?Songs for Unusual Creatures?, a video series full of music and an accompanying book to help kids (and adults) learn about some of the interesting creatures in the world! My kids would have LOVED this series when they were younger!

Watch the introductory video about the adorable and elusive Aye-Aye here:

Michael is a musician himself and how cool is it that the famous Kronos Quartet from San Francisco is helping him out in the first video? I especially appreciate that there is an interaction with the musicians in the video, asking for some musical interpretation, creating a music and natural science collaboration. This demonstration is a great message to send to kids, that the world is not neatly compartmentalized into the topics they teach at school, but rather a flow and blending of many aspects at any given time, and the introduction of a bit of the classical music world is extremely important in a day when that music is rarely heard by some children on a day to day basis.

The music and video series are meant to be accompanied by the book, ?Unusual Creatures: A Mostly Accurate Account of Some of Earth?s Strangest Animals?. You can also purchase the album for long car rides or for playing day to day!

This sounds like a great idea for birthday gifts for the young kids in your life. I can think of a few in my life who would love this. In addition, I will alert my local library to its existence and perhaps you should, too.

Turkish painter Burhan Dogancay dead at 83

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkish painter Burhan Dogancay, whose work has been exhibited in some 70 museums worldwide, including New York's Metropolitan Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, has died. He was 83.

Bergin Azer, director of the Dogancay Museum, said the artist died Tuesday of an undisclosed illness in Istanbul.

Much of Dogancay's art was inspired by graffiti, torn posters and banners found on city walls. His museum in Istanbul, which opened in 2004, was the first contemporary art museum in Turkey.

Dogancay's paintings are part of the permanent collections at the Metropolitan Art Museum and the Guggenheim. One of his paintings sold for $1.7 million at an Istanbul auction in 2009 ? the highest price paid for a contemporary art painting in Turkey.

Dogancay is survived by his wife. ?

Explosions kill 83 at Syrian university as exams begin

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two explosions tore through one of Syria's biggest universities on the first day of student exams on Tuesday, killing 83 people and wounding dozens, a monitoring group said.

Bloodshed has disrupted civilian life across Syria since a violent government crackdown in early 2011 on peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform turned the unrest into an armed insurgency bent on overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad.

More than 50 countries asked the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to refer the crisis to the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes people for genocide and war crimes. But Russia - Assad's long-standing ally and arms supplier - blocked the initiative, calling it "ill-timed and counterproductive.

Each side in the 22-month-old conflict blamed the other for Tuesday's blasts at the University of Aleppo, located in a government-held area of Syria's most populous city.

Some activists in Aleppo said a government attack caused the explosions, while state television accused "terrorists" - a term they often use to describe the rebels - of firing two rockets at the school. A rebel fighter said the blasts appeared to have been caused by "ground-to-ground" missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said 83 people were killed and dozens wounded, but it could not identify the source of the blasts.

"Dozens are in critical condition," the Observatory said in a statement, citing doctors and students.

State television showed a body lying on the street and several cars burning. One of the university buildings was damaged.

Video footage showed students carrying books out of the university after one of the explosions, walking quickly away from rising smoke. The camera then shakes to the sound of another explosion and people begin to run.

"A cowardly terrorist act targeted the students of Aleppo University as they sat for their mid-term examinations," Syria's United Nations ambassador, Bashar Ja'afari, told the U.N. Security Council in New York. He said 82 students had died and 162 more were wounded.

If confirmed, the government's report of a rocket attack would suggest rebels in the area had been able to obtain and deploy more powerful weapons than previously used.

The nearest rebel-controlled area, Bustan al-Qasr, is more than a mile away from the university.

Activists rejected the suggestion that insurgents were behind the attack, however, and instead blamed the government.

"The warplanes of this criminal regime do not respect a mosque, a church or a university," said a student who gave his name as Abu Tayem.

GRINDING TOWARD STALEMATE

The rebels have been trying to take Aleppo - once a thriving commercial hub - since the summer, but have been unable to uproot Assad's better-armed and more organized forces.

International efforts to find a political solution to Syria's civil war have similarly resulted in stalemate, even as the conflict's death toll surged above 60,000.

The crisis has driven hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country, many to neighboring Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, where a fire at a camp in the country's southeast killed a pregnant Syrian woman and her three children on Tuesday.

Inside Syria, neither the military nor the insurgents have been able to sustain clear momentum.

The rebels remain poorly equipped and disorganized compared with Assad's forces, despite winning support from some regional powers like Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The government also benefits from superior air power, used to pummel rebel-held areas around Damascus and elsewhere.

Rebel efforts to assault the capital also appear to have ground toward a stalemate. A witness in a rebel-controlled district of Damascus said on Tuesday the front line between the two sides was quiet.

The streets were still full of civilians, the witness said, despite the sound of shells hitting nearby buildings. He said people were walking around, buying sweets and sandwiches.

Investors?also?fretted over the debate brewing in Washington over raising the U.S. borrowing limit as well as what is expected to be a lackluster earnings season.?

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 33 points at 13,474 shortly after the opening bell Tuesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was off five at 1,465. The Nasdaq composite was down 17 points at 3,100.?

High-end yoga wear maker Lululemon Athletica dropped 7 percent after the company issued a revenue forecast that was below the forecasts of Wall Street analysts.?

RadioShack rose 2 percent after the electronics retailer said it would close down its mobile phone centers in Target stores, an operation that analysts see as a money-loser.?

On Monday, President Barack Obama rejected any negotiations with Republicans over raising the U.S. debt ceiling. The United States could default on its debt if Congress does not increase the borrowing limit.?

Resolving the debt ceiling debate is more a question of how than if. Investors are wary of another last-minute agreement like the one in August 2011, said Rick Meckler, president of investment firm LibertyView Capital Management in Jersey City, New Jersey.?

"Of course people expect the government will not default on its debt ... but there could be damage done in how it's resolved," said Meckler. "A long, dragged out fight over this damages the credibility of the government and can weaken the global market for U.S. debt."?

Speaking separately on Monday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke urged lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling. The central bank chairman also gave a cautiously optimistic outlook for U.S. growth but no clear hints on when the Fed would curb its aggressive bond purchases.?

Corporate earnings season picks up the pace this week and investors are bracing for disappointment. Analyst estimates for the quarter have fallen sharply since October. S&P 500 earnings growth is now seen up just 1.9 percent from a year ago, Thomson Reuters data showed.?

Although the data, on balance, was positive, reaction in the market was likely to be limited with investors' attention on the negotiations over the debt ceiling and spending cuts, said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany, NY.?

"'Fiscal Cliff Two' is now the principle focus of investors," he said.?

Built To Last: Proposition 39 And California's Schools | ThinkProgress

by Kate Gordon

Lately the news has been full of articles urging the United States to invest in our future by bringing our aging infrastructure up to modern standards. As it washed away hundred-year-old concrete and brought down old power lines, Hurricane Sandy underscored the fact that our nation?s very foundation is crumbling, and our ability to compete with other nations along with it. This Sunday?s New York Times lead editorial gave one reason for this inaction, noting that ?The need for investment in public works, never more urgent, has become a casualty of Washington?s ideological wars.?

Luckily, California ain?t Washington. On November 6, California voters cast a decisive vote in favor of investing in our state?s infrastructure over the long term by voting 60-40 in favor of Proposition 39.

On its surface, Proposition 39 was a tax measure, leveling the playing field for California-based companies by closing a corporate tax loophole that had allowed out-of-state corporations to pull their facilities and workers out of the state, and they choose to pay taxes based on the presence of those same facilities and workers rather than on their (impressive) California sales. Proposition 39 returned the state to a ?single sales factor? state, requiring all companies to pay taxes on their sales within the state.

But what one supportive San Diego blogger called ?the most boring proposition on the 2012 ballot? does more than restore order to a broken tax system. It also provides the opportunity for our state to invest in two critical pieces of our state infrastructure: our energy system and our public schools.

In closing that corporate tax loophole, Proposition 39 returns over $1 billion to the state of California each year. And the proposition made clear that half these funds, $550 million per year for five years, must go toward energy efficiency and clean energy projects in the state?s public buildings, primarily schools.

This week, The Center for the Next Generation released a white paper showing just how important these investments in schools will be for our students, workers, and communities. California?s school system is the largest in the country, serving over 6.2 million students ? one in eight of the nation?s entire population of K-12 students. These students are housed in over 10,000 schools in which over 70 percent of school buildings are over 25 years old. One-third of classrooms in the state are held in portable or modular buildings, many of which are desperately in need of maintenance and energy retrofitting, and some of which are actually toxic because of the chemicals they contain.

Investing Proposition 39 funds into the massive infrastructure project that is the California public school system could save the state over $230 million in energy costs each year, which could then be used to keep teachers on staff and books and computers in the hands of our students. It could create over 11,000 jobs per year associated with the energy efficiency retrofit projects. And it could vastly improve the air quality and overall environment within school buildings, lowering student absentee rates due to asthma and other illnesses, and even improving student test scores.

Washington, take note: Proposition 39 proves that voters understand the critical need to invest in our nation?s infrastructure. It also proves that clean energy is a political winner: in a poll of California voters by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates just after the election, 65 percent of ?yes? voters on Proposition 39 revealed they had supported the measure because it would expand the use of clean energy and ?improve the energy efficiency of buildings across California.?

The voters get it. The California legislature gets it: there are already several legislative proposals circulating in Sacramento with ideas on how to direct Proposition 39 funds in the most effective and efficient way possible toward our public schools and other public buildings. Other states get it, with infrastructure investment proposals cropping up across the country, many in response to concerns about new extreme weather events and their impact on roads, bridges, and the power grid. But ultimately it?s up to our federal government to provide the high-level, comprehensive policies that can make programs like Proposition 39 a reality across the country.

Washington, take note: if our nation physically crumbles, our status as a world leader crumbles too. It?s time to take action.

Kate Gordon is Director of Advanced Energy and Sustainability at The Center for the Next Generation.

Promoting a vibrant venture capital ecosystem in Canada

Montreal, Quebec

Objective

The Government of Canada will examine opportunities to promote a vibrant and diverse venture capital ecosystem.

Description

  • The availability of venture capital financing is just one driver of a successful, sustainable, private sector-led venture capital sector. Factors such as effective technology transfer offices; well-established angel networks; linkages to investment pools in other countries; availability of mentors for inexperienced venture capital firms and a deep pool of advisors and lawyers; and incubators/accelerators have been influential in growing vibrant knowledge economies such as Silicon Valley, Boston and New York. These supporting elements help entrepreneurs and young firms to develop their innovative ideas into strong business plans that open new markets and attract customers.
  • The Government of Canada has provided significant resources in recent budgets to enhance the ecosystem that drives knowledge-based company growth and job creation, including:
    • $110 million per year starting in 2012-13 to the National Research Council to double support for companies through the Industrial Research Assistance Program, and to expand the services provided to businesses through the program's Industrial Technology Advisors;
    • $80 million over three years starting in 2011-12 to launch the Digital Technology Adoption Pilot Program under the Industrial Research Assistance Program to help small- and medium-sized businesses accelerate their adoption of key information and communications technologies through collaborative projects with post-secondary institutions;
    • $12 million per year starting in 2012-13 to make the Business-Led Networks of Centres of Excellence program permanent;
    • $12 million over five years starting in 2011-12 to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to support joint college-university research and development projects with promising commercialization potential;
    • $95 million over three years, starting in 2013-14, and $40 million per year thereafter to make the Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program permanent and to add a military procurement component; and
    • Launching the Canadian Technology Accelerator initiatives in California and New York, which help Canadian entrepreneurs access venture capital, customers and partners in key markets in the United States to catalyze their growth.
  • The Government of Canada will examine opportunities to build on the successes in these and other areas to support the networks and culture that contribute to a sustainable and vibrant ecosystem.

Next Steps

The Government of Canada will continue to explore options to promote a vibrant and diverse venture capital ecosystem rooted in a strong entrepreneurial culture and well-established networks that link investors to innovative companies. More information will be made available in the coming months.

Apple is still a great company, but it?s no longer defying economic gravity

Apple Share Price DeclineApple

Apple?s (AAPL) share prices again got hammered on Monday after the Wall Street Journal reported that the company had dramatically slashed its supply orders for the iPhone 5. This comes on top of recent rumors that Apple is preparing to make a cheaper iPhone that could help it compete with low-cost Android handsets in emerging markets, despite the fact that it could lower the company?s smartphone margins. None of this should be seen as a sign that the world?s most valuable company is about to completely implode, of course ? it?s more that Apple for the first time in years is being forced to obey the laws of economic gravity.

[More from BGR: The strange math of Apple?s alleged massive iPhone 5 order cuts]

Some perspective: Apple?s earnings over the past several years have been remarkable by any standard, especially when you consider that they?ve come during a time when the world economy has either been in recession or has shown sluggish economic growth. The basic principles of economics teach?us that when money is tight, people are less willing to shell out cash for high-margin products that cost more money than competing goods. And yet Apple over the past five years was able to report record earnings despite an overall atmosphere of restrained consumer spending.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry 10 browser smokes iOS 6 and Windows Phone 8 in comparison test [video]]

How was it able to do this? First, its supply chain management was the best in the world and it could produce products with an efficiency that was unmatched throughout the tech industry. But even more significantly, the company really was releasing products that revolutionized computing and that weren?t easily replicated by its rivals.

Consider that between 2007 and 2010, Apple released the iPhone, the Macbook Air and the iPad, the three products that respectively created mass markets for smartphones, ultrabooks and tablets. In the span of just four years, Apple released three products that effectively brought an end to the era where Windows-based PCs were the dominant machines used for surfing the web and consuming digital content. And what?s more, Apple seemingly caught much of the industry so flat-footed that it took competitors a long time to catch up.

For example, recall that RIM?s (RIMM) first major attempt to challenge the iPhone was the BlackBerry Storm, a touch screen smartphone that not only came out a full year after the original iPhone but that was a vastly inferior device?hindered by both?bugs and a sub par user interface. Similarly, no Android device really captured the public?s imagination until the original Motorola DROID broke through in late 2009, more than two years after the iPhone took the world by storm. And even though Android quickly grew into the world?s most widely used mobile operating system, no company could really figure out how to swing big profits with Android devices until Samsung (005930) pulled it off in 2012 with the Galaxy S III.

Microsoft (MSFT) also gave Apple a big assist over this period by being completely asleep at the wheel when it came to designing a mobile operating system capable of translating Windows to a post-PC world. Microsoft seems to have finally woken up to the mobile world with the release of Windows 8, although the company?s transition from creating desktop-centric software to mobile-centric has experienced more than a few hiccups and will likely take some time to fully mature as an OS.

But even though it?s taken Apple?s competitors a while to catch up, that doesn?t change the fact that Apple for the first time in a while is facing some pretty fierce competition in the consumer electronics market. What makes this particularly challenging for Apple is that it?s getting hit on two fronts: Competitors are releasing top-notch smartphones on the high-end such as the Galaxy S III while simultaneously chipping away at Apple?s once-dominant tablet market share on the low-end with the $200 Amazon (AMZN) Kindle Fire and the Google (GOOG) Nexus 7.

What?s more, Apple last year acknowledged consumer preferences for both larger smartphones with the iPhone 5 and smaller tablets with the iPad mini. The latter product was particularly significant because the late Steve Jobs had been skeptical that consumers really wanted to own smaller tablets. The company whose philosophy was once seemingly governed by Jobs? notion that consumers often ?don?t know what they want until you show it to them? is now learning that consumers may want things that Apple?s competitors are showing them as well.

None of which means that Apple has lost its touch and that it won?t continue to be the dominant player in the tech industry for years to come. It?s just that, for the first time in a long time, the company is now following the same rules of economics that other companies have to follow just as the cost of doing business.

Fast-food diet 'linked to asthma'

Eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma and eczema in children, say researchers who have looked at global disease and dietary patterns.

Data from more than 500,000 children in more than 50 countries suggests poor diet may be to blame for rising levels of these allergy-related conditions.

Those who ate fast food, such as take-away burgers, risked severe asthma, eczema and itchy, watery eyes.

Eating plenty of fruit appears to be protective, Thorax journal reports.

Fast food often contains high levels of saturated- and trans-fatty acids, which are known to affect immunity, while fruit is rich in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds, say the researchers.

In the study, children in their early teens who ate three or more weekly servings of fast food had a 39% increased risk of severe asthma.

Six- and seven-year-olds had a 27% increased risk.

Eating three or more portions of fruit a week cut the risk of severe asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis by between 11% and 14%.

The study authors, Prof Innes Asher, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and Prof Hywel Williams, from the University of Nottingham in the UK, said: "If the associations between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance owing to the rising consumption of fast foods globally."

Generally, people with asthma do not have to follow a special diet.

In some cases, certain foods, such as cow's milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, yeast products, nuts, and some food colourings and preservatives, can make symptoms worse.

Malayka Rahman of Asthma UK, said research suggests that a person's diet may contribute to their risk of developing asthma and that eating healthily may have a beneficial effect.

"Evidence suggests that the vitamins and antioxidants found in fresh fruit and vegetables have a beneficial effect on asthma therefore Asthma UK advises people with asthma to eat a healthy, balanced diet including five portions of fruit or vegetables every day, fish more than twice a week, and pulses more than once a week."

Thinking About Buying Real Estate? Read These Tips First | Siben ...

Making a real estate purchase is a big transaction for anyone, especially first-time home buyers. The commitment and expense can be stressful. Use the advice contained in this article so that you have the most success and ease any of your concerns.

When you are in real estate negotiations, be sure to keep your approach moderate. Some people feel as though they should be aggressive in order to get the best price; this can backfire on them. Be clear and firm about what you want but let your lawyer or realtor do the negotiation for you.

TIP! Don?t set your sights on a home that is adjacent to a highway or other major artery. These houses tend to be a little less expensive then houses in the middle and can be tempting to purchase, however, they are less expensive for a reason.

One of the first things to do when moving into your new home is to make sure you are adequately protected by home insurance. Putting this off means that the insurance may not kick in if something bad happens, and we all know just how unpredictable Mother Nature can be at times.

If you are hiring an appraiser when buying real estate, make sure that they have at least five years experience. Avoid hiring appraisers that are recommended by the real estate agency. This represents a possible conflict of interest. Make sure that any appraiser you deal with has a state license.

TIP! It is important to get pre-qualified for a home loan before you go searching for a house. It would be a shame to find the one home you?ve been looking for and then discover that you can?t get a large enough loan to cover it.

Get a professional inspector to look over any home you are thinking about making an offer on. You don?t want a home that needs major revisions. Not only do surprise renovations cost you money you don?t want to spend, if they?re really serious, you might have to find another place to live while the work is being done.

Don?t delay investing in real estate. Housing prices are extremely low, and it is the right time to invest. When buying a house for your personal use, research the real estate market in your area and use a qualified local agent. The markets will go up again someday, so any investment you make will have returns.

When looking for new real estate investments, you should always focus on your goals. Consider whether you have long term or short term goals. If your goals do not match a potential investment, walk away from it. Sometimes, property buyers wind up with a lousy investment because they forget to make sure it meets their needs.

TIP! Think about the parking situation in the area you?ll be buying a home. This is particularly important for homes without driveways.

Now that you have the knowledge you need, are you ready to commit to buy? Hopefully, these tips will ease your concerns. Use these tips to find out how to be successful and make it easy to live your life. Buying real estate can be simple. It feels great to finally own property! Just know how much it truly costs and make your decisions as wisely as possible.

Texas man in ICU after "tremendous" house blast

LEWISVILLE, Texas An explosion Friday in a North Texas neighborhood leveled a home that is part of a nonprofit group's affordable housing program, injuring three men and scattering debris.

Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the blast inside the home in Lewisville, about 20 miles northwest of Dallas. Two firefighters who were standing on the street near the home and another man who was inside were injured.

Lewisville Assistant Fire Chief Brian Freed said crews will search the debris, but officials believe they've accounted for everyone who might have been in the duplex. The injured man is believed to live alone, based on what neighbors told firefighters, Freed said.

Firefighters had waited to search the debris until a natural gas line near the home was shut down.

The injured men were taken to Medical Center of Lewisville. Freed said the man who lived in the home was in intensive care after surgery. One of the firefighters was hospitalized with chest pains but was expected to recover. The other firefighter had been treated and released. None of the men were immediately identified.

The home is owned by Christian Community Action, which rents it out to families who are struggling financially, said Ron Batts, president and CEO of the nonprofit group.

Freed said firefighters had first gone to the home around 10 a.m. Friday after a gas leak was reported. Natural gas provider Atmos Energy worked on the leak for about 2 1/2 hours when the home, which was next to the line being worked on, exploded.

"There was no indication. It was just an immediate explosion," Freed said. Some homes in the area had been evacuated when the leak was first reported, he said.

Freed said construction work originally caused the leak.

Jennifer Ryan, a spokeswoman for Atmos Energy, said a third party construction crew had damaged the natural gas line while working on a utility pole.

"Crews are working diligently to make repairs to the line, restore service and make sure the area is safe," Ryan said.

Bronnia Campbell lived in a nearby home also owned by Christian Community Action. When she heard a booming noise and saw debris flying in the air, Campbell said she feared for the worst.

"I thought, 'He's not going to feel a thing,"' Campbell said.

She described the injured man as someone who "minds his own business, but he's a nice guy."

Ray Hall, owner of Hall Electrical Services, a business near the explosion, said he and others were inside their building when they heard a large boom.

Hall described the blast as "a tremendous explosion" and said he saw high flames and debris floating in the air.

Plantronics lays off engineers, moves operations jobs to Mexico

SANTA CRUZ -- Headset-maker Plantronics is making staff changes that affect 41 employees in Santa Cruz, including layoffs in engineering, vice president of global communications Genevieve Haldeman said Friday.

"The majority of those impacted were in operations or back office roles, although there were a handful in engineering," she said.

The operations roles are being moved to Plantronics' existing facility in Mexico, which has about 2,000 employees, she added.

About 550 people work in the Santa Cruz office.

Employees got the news as Plantronics made an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show, the world's largest consumer technology trade show, which wrapped up Friday in Las Vegas.

Plantronics' Voyager Legend headset, Blackwire 720 headset, Calisto 620 speakerphone, M55 headset and Find MyHeadset application were named International CES Innovations 2013 Honorees.

Aaron Swartz, the Internet political activist who co-wrote the initial specification for RSS, was found dead at age 26 (CNN)

Los Angeles (CNN) ? Aaron Swartz, an Internet savant who at a young age shaped the online era by co-developing RSS and Reddit and later became a digital activist, has committed suicide, a relative told CNN Saturday.

He was 26 years old.

A prodigy, Swartz was behind some of the Internet?s iconic moments, soaring to heights that many developers only dream of. At the same time, he was plagued by legal problems arising from his aggressive activism, and he was also known to suffer depression, a personal matter that he publicly revealed on his blog.

Technology activist Cory Doctorow met Swartz when he was 14 or 15, Doctorow said on his blog.

?In so many ways, he was an adult, even then, with a kind of intense, fast intellect that really made me feel like he was part and parcel of the Internet society,? Doctorow wrote.

?But Aaron was also a person who?d had problems with depression for many years,? Doctorow blogged. He added that ?whatever problems Aaron was facing, killing himself didn?t solve them. Whatever problems Aaron was facing, they will go unsolved forever.?

At age 14, Swartz co-wrote the RSS specification.

He was later admitted to Stanford University, but dropped out after a year because, as he wrote in a blog post, ?I didn?t find it a very intellectual atmosphere, since most of the other kids seemed profoundly unconcerned with their studies.?

What he did next was help develop Reddit, the social news website that was eventually bought by heavyweight publisher Conde Nast in 2006.

Swartz then engaged in Internet digital activism, co-founding Demand Progress, a political action group that campaigns against Internet censorship.

But he pushed the legal limits, allegedly putting him on the wrong side of the law.

In 2011, he was arrested in Boston for alleged computer fraud and illegally obtaining documents from protected computers. He was later indicted from an incident in which he allegedly stole millions of online documents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He pleaded not guilty in September, according to MIT?s ?The Tech? newspaper.

Two years earlier, the FBI investigated him after he released millions of U.S. federal court documents online. The alleged hacking was significant because the documents came from the government-run Public Access to Court Electronic Records, or PACER, which typically charges a fee, which was 8 cents a page in 2009.

No charges were filed in that case, but on October 5, 2009, he posted online his FBI file that he apparently requested from the agency. He redacted the FBI agents? names and his personal information, he said.

In that file, the FBI said more than 18 million pages with a value of about $1.5 million were downloaded from PACER in September 2008 to Swartz?s home in Highland Park, Illinois.

?As I hoped, it?s truly delightful,? he wrote of his FBI file.

Swartz, who completed a fellowship at Harvard?s Ethics Center Lab on Institutional Corruption, frequently blogged about his life, success and personal struggles. In some instances, he wrote about death.

?There is a moment, immediately before life becomes no longer worth living, when the world appears to slow down and all its myriad details suddenly become brightly, achingly apparent,? he wrote in a 2007 post titled ?A Moment Before Dying.?

On November 27, 2007, he blogged about ?depressed mood.?

?Surely there have been times when you?ve been sad. Perhaps a loved one has abandoned you or a plan has gone horribly awry. Your face falls. Perhaps you cry. You feel worthless. You wonder whether it?s worth going on,? he wrote.

?Everything you think about seems bleak ? the things you?ve done, the things you hope to do, the people around you. You want to lie in bed and keep the lights off. Depressed mood is like that, only it doesn?t come for any reason and it doesn?t go for any either.

?At best, you tell yourself that your thinking is irrational, that it is simply a mood disorder, that you should get on with your life. But sometimes that is worse. You feel as if streaks of pain are running through your head, you thrash your body, you search for some escape but find none. And this is one of the more moderate forms,? he wrote.

CNN?s David Ariosto in New York contributed to this report.
