Israelis near Egypt advised to stay indoors

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli security officials have advised residents living near the Egyptian border to stay indoors because of fighting in the neighboring country.

Egyptian security forces have been clashing with Islamic militants in the northern Sinai Desert for the past two years. The fighting has increased since the military ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on July 3.

In the past, Islamic militants have launched attacks on Israel from Sinai.

Israeli officials say the fighting is an internal Egyptian matter, but they are keeping a close eye on the unrest.

Security officials said late Sunday that the advisory to stay indoors was a precaution, not an order, and it would remain in effect while fighting continued. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter with reporters.
