Soulik hits China with 73 mph winds after deadly pass over Taiwan

BEIJING, July 13 (UPI) -- At least one person was killed and 21 were injured Saturday when Typhoon Soulik hit Taiwan, before making landfall in China's Fujian Province, officials said.

The storm had winds as high as 73 mph when it came ashore in mainland China about 4 p.m. local time, with waves more than 30 feet high, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

Soulik was moving northwest at 12-15 mph and was expected to enter Jiangzu Province after midnight, meteorologists at the Fujian weather station said.

More than 300,000 people had fled Fujian Province ahead of Soulik, the seventh typhoon to hit the Chinese mainland this year.

In Taiwan, more than 8,500 people were evacuated from mountainous regions and other dangerous areas as the storm hit.

Schools and offices in Taipei were closed Friday afternoon and more than 50,000 soldiers had been put on standby.
